Authorities are working to determine the cause of an explosion at a home in Garden City on Thursday.
At 6:20 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a potential house explosion in the 6500 block of Silvio Street.
Crews found there had been an explosion at the one-story home, which was on fire, with black smoke pouring out of the home, said Garden City Fire Chief Randy Keen.
Keen said a neighbor reported to authorities that one person lived at the home. Firefighters conducted a search and concluded no one was home during the explosion.
The fire and several hot spots were extinguished by 7:20 p.m.
DTE crews responded to the scene and cut gas service to the home, DTE spokesperson Chris Lamphear said. He declined to say whether the explosion was caused by gas, deferring to police and fire officials.
The source of the explosion remained under investigation by Thursday night.
"At this time we're looking into the cause and origin of the fire because, obviously, homes just don't explode on their own," Keen said.
Keen said there were no reported injuries to the resident of the home or firefighters, and no neighboring homes were damaged.
